The international condemnation of the Nicolás Maduro regime: the diplomatic boycott, increasing the reward being offered for his capture to $25 million for this dictator, imposed by force and against the will of Venezuelan voters, are positive but insufficient for the events unfolding in Venezuela..  Are Maduro’s statements on January 11, 2025 about “taking up arms together with Cuba and Nicaragua” to preserve “peace” not enough?

Why do the United States, the European Union and Canada not activate additional sanctions on the dictatorships of Cuba and Nicaragua, which directly support the Venezuelan dictatorship in the region, in order to put additional pressure on Maduro?

“Both Miguel Díaz-Canel and Daniel Ortega attended this Friday, January 10, the coup d’état of Nicolás Maduro against Venezuelan democracy. Maduro’s subsequent statements before an ‘anti-fascist’ forum organized by officialdom demonstrate the danger of the violence that the three allied dictatorships can unleash against Venezuelans. Why does the United States still maintain a Free Trade Agreement with the Nicaraguan dictatorship while Managua supports the dictator in Venezuela, Putin’s war in Ukraine and Moscow’s military presence in Nicaragua? “Why did the Biden Administration repeatedly relax sanctions on the Cuban dictatorship?” asked John Suárez, Executive Director of the Center for a Free Cuba, over X (formerly Twitter).

An additional effective way to pressure Maduro is by sanctioning his direct allies, who represent the strategic political, economic, and military support he so desperately needs to remain in power.

“If the United States, the European Union, and Canada really want to pressure the Venezuelan dictatorship, then they must end economic relations, exchange agreements, and the relaxation of measures against the dictatorships of Cuba and Nicaragua. Any economic exchange with Nicaragua or Cuba benefits those dictatorships and strengthens their systems of repression against their own people, while directly favoring the Maduro dictatorship. The current position taken by Washington, Brussels, and Ottawa maintains a status quo in Venezuela and the region that will entrench the Maduro regime, and cost more human lives if not corrected,” said Janisset Rivero, Program Officer of the Center for a Free Cuba.
