Center for a Free Cuba Represented at Human Rights Day Breakfast at Czech Embassy

On Monday, December 11, 2023, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Washington DC hosted its Human Rights Day Breakfast at the residence of the Czech Ambassador. Executive Director John Suarez, and Executive Director Emeritus Frank Calzon on behalf of the Center for a Free Cuba attended the event. Chinese Liaison Officer Tsultrim Gyatso on behalf of the Office of Tibet also attended the event.

Czech Ambassador Miloslav Stašek with Ramzi Abu-Eid, Head of Political Section and Jan Woska, Head of Public Diplomacy Culture Attaché warmly greeted the guests at the breakfast and highlighted the historical background of the event. Ambassador Stašek highlighted human rights as one of the top priorities of the Czech Republic’s foreign policy and recalled his memory of visiting Cuba.

John Suarez and Frank Calzon gave an update on the current situation in Cuba to the Ambassador, and his staff members in attendasnce, and thanked him for extending the invitation and prioritizing human rights issues as an important part of their diplomacy. Mr. Calzon further expressed appreciation to the Czech Republic for leading the successful efforts at the UN Human Rights Commission in 2000 and 2001 to condemn Cuba’s human rights violations, and the continued need for a special rapporteur on Cuba.
