Center for a Free Cuba. Geneva, Switzerland. November 14, 2023. The voices of relatives of Cuban political prisoners and political prisoners were heard today at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva during the premiere of the documentary “Free from Within,” which was produced and edited in Cuba by the independent press agency Palenque Visión.

The premiere took place in a hybrid side event within UN headquarters at Room XX, of the Palais des Nations, moderated by Hillel C. Neuer, Executive Director of the Geneva-based organization UN Watch on the eve of the Universal Periodic Review of Cuba.

“It is excellent to have in this forum the voices of people inside Cuba with their urgent testimonies and I hope that they receive the protection of the UN Human Rights Council against any repressive measures by the Cuban government,” said Hillel Neuer, Executive Director of UN Watch.

Sirley Avila León, Rosa María Payá and Anamely Ramos González provided first hand testimony on the systematic violation of human rights in Cuba, and how it impacted them..

John Suárez made an introduction within the historical context of the issue of human rights in Cuba, making a comparison of the role of the free Cuban nation in the genesis of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the current reality on the island.

Janisset Rivero presented the report on extrajudicial executions carried out by the Center for a Free Cuba.

Yunier Suárez presented the report prepared by Cuba Decide that includes a summary of the systematic violation of human rights on the Island, the arbitrary detentions, and the situation in Cuba’s prisons.

During the event, recommendations were shared on urgent questions that the Cuban State should answer regarding the human rights situation on the Island in their upcoming Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
