Havana, September 12, 2023. Center for a Free Cuba. During the evening of September 11, opposition activist and independent journalist Rolando Rodriguez Lobaina was detained in Havana by State Security agents and his whereabouts are unknown according to his sister María Isabel Rodriguez Lobaina to the Center for a Free Cuba.

“My brother Rolando was arrested tonight,” María Isabel explained in a text at 9:30 PM yesterday.

Opponent José Alberto Alvarez Bravo said that he received a message from Rolando at 8:51 PM in which he said that he was suffering persecution by the political police.

“I suggested that he send me a message every two hours, and if I stopped receiving them we already knew the reason,” Alvarez Bravo told the Center for a Free Cuba.

At the time of writing this statement, it is unknown under what circumstances Rodriguez Lobaina was arrested and where he has been taken. In previous arrests, Rodriguez Lobaina was detained for several days while his family did not know his whereabouts, and the authorities deny that he is detained, which has placed him in a life-threatening situation.

At the time of writing this statement, family members have not been given information about his situation.

The Center for a Free Cuba denounces the detention of Rolando Rodriguez Lobaina in the context of a worsening of repressive conditions on the Island, and in the weeks leading up to the Universal Periodic Review of Cuba before the UN Human Rights Council, a review of the human rights record of the Castro regime over the past four years.
