Washington, D.C., July 31, 2023. Center for a Free Cuba. The Center for a Free Cuba wants to recognize the important legacy of the Cuban dissident Vladimiro Roca Antúnez who, when he died this past July 30th, leaves behind him the testimony of a man who broke with the political power imposed on the island to join the fight for the restoration of freedom.

“The courage shown by Vladimiro Roca in breaking with the system he was a part of since he was born as the son of Blas Roca Calderío, one of the main leaders of the extinct Popular Socialist Party, is essential to understanding the challenges he faced. Vladimiro’s father, Blas Roca, was a key figure in the Castro regime’s power structure. Vladimiro Roca took on the regime from its foundations, and created independent spaces to debate Cuban reality, such as founding the Cuban Social Democratic Party, the Dissidence Working Group that drafted the document “The Homeland Belongs to All” with other dissidents, and joined important efforts to unite the opposition movement on the Island,” said John Suárez, Executive Director of the Center.

Vladimiro Roca Antúnez began to make public his differences with the prevailing system from the summer of 1990, and already in 1991 he stated that he would do everything possible using legal means to change the communist system in Cuba. For creating entities and projects that would help discern a path to freedom for the Cuban people, he was imprisoned, repressed, isolated and slandered by the repressive forces of the Ministry of the Interior.

His actions and trajectory within the dissident movement in Cuba should be an inspiration for those in power on the Island, who today more than ever know that the country is in a dead end if it continues to be controlled by communist policies.
